Sock Club 2011 April

June 30th, 2011

There was a bit of a blogging hiatus, so I have some catching up to do! Here’s another peek at the 2011 Sock Club. For the second shipment, club members received a sneak preview skein of Lorna’s Laces Solemate yarn which features a phase change material that helps regulate temperature. It’s totally space age techno stuff that’s used by NASA! The color inspiration was jam, and I think Beth got it just right. The exclusive colorway is Boysenberry Jam, and it is delicious.

Lorna's Laces Solemate

The two accompanying patterns went with the jammy inspiration.

Boysenberry Yo

Above we have the Boysenberry Yo sock in front and the PB&J sock in the background. Every shipment includes a simple pattern for when times are rough and another pattern. The simple pattern in this case is definitely Boysenberry Yo.

PB&J from the side

A closer look at the PB&J socks from the side show the two twisted stitch panels criss-crossing over themselves. My favorite detail on the PB&J socks is at the toe.

PB&J Foot

I love how many club members are knitting the socks, chatting away in the Ravelry group, and posting photos of finished projects. Josiane (who lives in Switzerland!) knit the Boysenberry Yo socks in the club yarn:

And enjoyed them enough to knit a second pair in Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock. She’s got some Lorna’s Laces love going on here.

And here’s a look at Boysenberry Yo in even more yarns. Sarah knit them using String Theory Caper Sock yarn. I forgot to ask her if she fell in love with the yarn after the first shipment or if she already had some lying around.

And there have been some striped versions in the works. Gretchen‘s Morning Glory Yos show off the striping and the patterning beautifully.

If you didn’t get in on the fun this year, these patterns will be released in April 2012. Or you can sign up for 2012 Club announcements.

A look at the Sock Club

June 28th, 2011

I’ll admit I’ve read enough about yarn clubs gone wrong that I was a bit nervous before starting the my own sock club. Well, there was no good reason for that. I’m only half way through the shipments, and I am having a BLAST! Here’s a look at the first club patterns which featured the fantastically cashmere-enhanced, utterly squishable String Theory Fiber Arts Caper Sock yarn in the exclusive Solas colorway.

Haleakala

The Haleakala pattern has two versions, a straight one that takes the lace panel straight down the foot and an angled one that shifts the gusset decreases, creating a V-shape across the top of the foot. Alice Yu aka Socktopus modeled these back in January, and I’ll be seeing her shortly in London for Knit Nation! And here’s a look at both shipment patterns, Haleakala (angled version) and Ripple Leaf.

Haleakala and Ripple Leaf

One thing I love about the club is that there are two patterns for every shipment and one skein of yarn. Some members are using the extra pattern to work on stash yarn, so I get to see the patterns in non-club yarns too. Francoise knit these hot pink Ripple Leaf socks using Malabrigo yarn:

And Saccade knitted these Milkweed Ripple Leafs:

Both patterns will be available to non-club-members in February 2012. Want to know when sign-ups open for next year’s club? Fill out this form.

Sign-ups open for Oakland classes

June 26th, 2011

Details are now finalized for workshops I’ll be teaching later this year at A Verb For Keeping Warm in Oakland, California! There will be an opening event with a design talk on Friday night, August 5, and then classes run through the weekend on August 6 and 7. I’m so happy to be doing this with Anne Hanson. We travel to the same places so often, and she is always such a riot to hang out with. We could (and do) stay up all night talking about anything and everything.

A Verb For Keeping Warm

And, the icing on the cake is that we’ll be at A Verb For Keeping Warm which is on my home turf. The above photo was taken with my phone camera which doesn’t really show how expansive and beautiful the space is, but it really is. Last time I was there, I scored some wonderful Habu yarns.

Oh right, visit the AVFKW website for event details, or for information on other events check the Event page. Yay, I’m excited!

Heading to London soon

June 23rd, 2011

I’m gearing up to take a hop across the pond for Knit Nation in London. It’s going to be a fabulous event with a great line up of teachers and vendors. I’m so excited to be doing it again! Last year was a blast! And look, this year fantastic mugs are available for pre-order at the Knit Nation site (you have to register).

Sock Club is FULL

January 4th, 2011

Holy cow, I had no idea that the sock club would fill up so quickly. The last spot was taken this morning. I am completely amazed at the response.

Happy new year!

Sock club sign ups open

December 16th, 2010

I’m happy to announce a new sock club for 2011 combining two of my favorite things: baking cookies and knitting socks.

I’ll be doing 6 shipments of yarn, 12 top-down sock patterns, and 12 cookie recipes for a sock-along bake-along. For more details see the club page.

There’s also a special offer for $50 off if you join both the Cookie A sock club and either of Janel Laidman’s two sock clubs.

As for my whack hair cut, I never did get a good picture of it when it was all straight and flat-ironed. I’m still on the fence about how whack it really is. I was kind of hoping some of my hair would be shaved off, but alas it’s  short but all mostly there. My mom would be relieved.

Hoping for a whack hair style

Books are in!

November 8th, 2010

The books arrived quite a bit earlier than I was expecting! Unfortunately, I was in LA over the weekend and haven’t begun shipping yet. If you’re a local yarn shop owner in the US, you can order the book from Unicorn Books. They’ve already begun shipping. If you’re a shop owner outside the US, you can order from SearchPress in the EU (they also ship to Australia) and Gemini Fibres in Canada.

A word of warning to Canadians: I have no idea how Knit. Sock. Love. made it onto Amazon.ca. It’s possible that Amazon.com is shipping from their US warehouses to the Canadian warehouses, but I don’t understand why the product descriptions don’t match. I’ve tried to contact them to see what their source for getting the books is, but they haven’t responded. I am a bit worried that they won’t be getting the book and some Canadians may be left wondering where their order is. If you’re not in a rush to get it, you can wait it out and see what happens. (I’m very curious!) Otherwise, I recommend ordering from the CookieA.com shop or from your local yarn shop.

Here are the books in their boxes.

Books in boxes

Neatly packed in boxes

I ran around and picked up as many of these envelopes as I could from nearby post offices. My order of envelopes shouldn’t arrive until later.

Envelopes

A bit short on envelopes

And to keep the books safe for their travels around the world, I got some padding. This pile is bigger than me!

Padding

Fluffy goodness I just want to jump on

Ok, I’m off to prepare books to begin shipping tomorrow. If you ordered the book from the CookieA.com shop, shipping details will be emailed 2-3 days before your book is set to ship, and if there’s an error you can follow the link in the email to give a corrected address. I’m shipping out books in the order they were received, and unfortunately I can only ship a small number per day until I get my shipment of envelopes from the post office. I didn’t expect the books to arrive so early!

Surprise package

November 2nd, 2010

I was just about to dig into this:

deliciousness

homemade jam from Janice, Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam cheese, and an English muffin

when a knock came on my door, and I found a package from Interweave. Of course I started to get excited. Did I somehow make it onto their list of people to send review copies of books to? Imagine my surprise when I found this inside:

Sock Innovation -- in Finnish!

Sock Innovation... in Finnish!

I’m going to Los Angeles this weekend to visit with Rick, Lindsay and Angee who are all patterns in the book, and I can’t wait to show them.

Angee in Finnish

I especially love the acknowledgments in Finnish. “Ja tietenken <3 BobaKnit” hahahahaha.

kiitokset

And of course, a side by side comparison with the original Sock Innovation.

You can see the color is slightly different. I’m not sure if you can see the paper differences. The Finnish version is printed on matte paper and feels thicker. And of course, it’s in Finnish.

It distracted me long enough from the deliciousness that was to follow.
